In Ireland, woodcock hunting is traditionally carried out using the rough shooting method. Hunters form a line and advance together, working through dense cover and thick vegetation where woodcock typically hide, as well as marshes and wet meadows, which are the preferred habitat of snipe. Springer spaniels are the dogs of choice for this type of hunting. Thanks to their parially webbed feet, they can move more easily across bogs and marshy ground without sinking. However, one essential rule applies: hunters must always keep pace with their dogs. Unlike pointing breeds, Springers do not indicate the bird’s presence before flushing it. Instead, they flush the game suddenly and without warning, so hunters must remain constantly alert and stay close to their dogs, ready to shoot at any moment. For this reason, as no pointing dogs are used, rough shooting is most effecive when carried out by a group of around six hunters. This formation ensures that, wherever a woodcock or snipe flushes, at least one member of the line is likely to have the bird within shooting range. If it is not possible to form a party of six, smaller groups may be combined to reach the recommended number of six hunters, ensuring the best possible hunting experience for everyone. We strongly recommend that each party consists of friends or acquaintances travelling together, ideally with one designated group leader. The group leader will co-ordinate the party and collect all the documents required from each participant for the temporary export and import of firearms. Our team at Corrib Lodge will then take care of the entire firearms permit application process.
